The Lada 21-05, today’s survivor
Lada trademark stands nowadays for land cruiser Lada Niva, known – albeit here, in Italy like the “poors’ land-cruiser”, due its spartan built arrangement. Altogether it works properly and couple with its task very well.
But, to watch carefully the type, especially by older people, it sports many not at all unknown items, because at the Togliatti’s AutoVaz car plant, a good account of the present production is devoted to the last Fiat 124 klone, the so-called Lada 2105
This is the today’s version of the old Zhigulì (VAZ or Lada, as per your taste but the matrix is Fiat, however), albeit aesthetically retouched and a bit renewed. The origin of this version bore in the far 1980s circa and, according to that era vogue, it was redesigned copyng in and from near there.
Notwithstanding this, the Lada 2105 held its main original arrangement building and due this it carry on its target, to mobilise Russians and neighbourhood at cheap costs.
To a close examination we can see that Russians need it by all means the 2105 one is not a finesse’ masterpiece yet, that people had better merits. It seems this model has some “Fiat 131-like” matching items, like the bumpers’ area, the forward mudguards, the frontal and rear lights. These last resembled the 131’s ones very much, and the tail of this Lada is very much heavy aesthetically. Front side view is far better and it sports light alloy bumpers with rubber trims.
The general car’s line is the same, unchanged and unmistakable of the previous Fiat 124, little airscoops near the rear windscreen included. Slightly changed the doors design, with new sleeves but, without deflectors above all. All satin-black painted are the related struts.
The wheel’s discs are also new, quite good albeit not superlative. Inside, the cockpit is totally renewed, being a substantial copy of that of 1976 Fiat 128CL model, with the same ABS moulded dashboard and relate switches/clocks arrangement.
At the time some new options were included, like the clock lights regulation, an amperometer gauge, rear mirror internal switch, and a cigarette lighter.
The options are completed with headrest, security belts and defrosting rear windscreen. The tool box is very complete, as usual in the Ladas.
The mechanical general layout is unchanged altogether, being fitted with the same previous 1294cc engine with a single rubber belted cam shaft located in the upper side of it, a rather reliable and strong unit. Unchanged the suspensions and the brakes system also, in being fitted with independent and doubled security circuit. That is synthetically the Lada 2105, a strong and reliable sedan car for family purposes. The same key are its performances.
If you want to find a fault in it you must look at the building process. These cars are built in the same manner of some thirty years ago and the man-work force and them skillfull are very poor and un-specialised. Last, but not at least, the materials are very poor and this drives to a poor quality final product. It is stated that albeit the 50% of the East production cars don’t pass the final acceptance controls and they must driven back for overhauls. The assistance network were, at that time quite poor and all of that downed quite to zero the sales in Italy.
Despite
all of that the Lada 2105 has well estabilished itself in European and other
land market, a great quantity being sold all over the world.
By this basic model another version, the so-called “iron-face”
was derived, a quite awful rework being this the premier version of the model,
raising up to 1500cm3. An Estate-kombi version was also derived (Lada 21-04).
When I’saw it for the first time, in 1982 circa, I’ smiled because it resembled me a sort of “131-attempt”. I’ think the flop of her sales in Italy was due its poor image, too much modified for latin taste and the very lacking of the assistance network, quite absent here at that era.
I’ remember that time the scrapyards were filled with many half-new Zaz and Moskwitches body car, completely rusted , faulted and with no spares at all. This affected the Ladas image also, being in this way its detractors fully right.
