è sempre la stessa storia! Vignetta disegnata da un giovanissimo Paolo alla fine degli anni '70 del secolo scorso, purtroppo è sempre attuale.

Fiat 124' FIRST DERIVATIVE AND FOREIGN SISTERS- part 2°

( go to part 1°)

Some time ago we have seen during the Spring 1966 an urgent issue to replace the old Fiat "1800/2100" was needed. But is it not possible to plan an entire brand new car so quickly, so Ing. Dante Giacosa, Fiat engineering chief management's fullfilled this arduos task using available components.
With an admirable example of industrial sinergy he put together the Fiat 125 Sedan model, what will become one of the many Fiat's bestseller, until the end of 1972. The Fiat 125 is very important because she was a Fiat 124 derivative, not yet another version; she was built utilizing many 124 components but she was longer than that altough they resembled each other. They had doors, glasses, hood and many more gadgets in commonplace.

A so successful model drove to a very large family with many relatives; other two models developed shortly afterward were the Argentinian built Fiat-Concord 125 potenciado Mirafiori and the Polish one, the so famous Polski-Fiat 125p. The Argentinian issue resembled in many respects the Italian masterpiece very much. Not the same for the Polish counterpart. Let's take her a look.

In 1965 in the East another big Country other than the Russians needed to be motorized: that Country was the Poland. But not like her cumbersome neighbourhood, Poland had a her own estabilished car plants and her technology was second to none. But it is stated that East's people had better merits than aesthetic aptitudes, and in those dark days, under the soviet heel, Poles were not an exception; so they asked for help to Italy's bigger and experienced car producer, the Fiat Company.

Polish requirements were satisfied with some a compilation of two car models; an old but sturdy car near to be retired, the Fiat "1300" was selected and re-dressed with a new body, the new Fiat 125 release one. In fact to be correct, we must say that the Polski-Fiat 125p wasn't simply the Italian twin-cam Fiat 125 built by licence in Warsaw but "a masked 1961 Fiat "1300"model with the new Fiat 125 body.

The noble Polish people is a master to arrange themselves with available items and the 125p was a big goal: up to November 28, 1967 til June 26, 1991 some 1,222,887 cars were built. In turn the Polski-Fiat Company (Polmo-FSO, Fabryka Samochodowa Osobowich, big plant car factory) built other two big car plants, in Aegypt and Thailand rispectively. Other overhaul centres were opened in the main European Countries.

Not withstanding being based upon a Fifties' project, the 125p was a modern car altogether when especially compared with local products and with this FSO Company became a modern factory with Western' last scream technology. This change cost 40 USD million and some 150 polish firms worked to achive this goal. First 125Ps were very primitive and basic issues, although so much reliable: in so doing they resembled their parent car, the Fiat 1300, very much. In fact they used so much components of this last, lights, wheels, cockpit etc included.

Among the numerous versions the Estate-Kombi, the Abulance and Pick-up were developed later and pressed into production. 1300 and 1500 cm3 cubature engines were available. In 1975 a real change happened in the development of this notable car, a total re-arrangement was operated. With 125PF model the car was totally rebuilt. Re-dressed with the Fiat 125 Special Mk.II body she had a new black plastic frontal grille with the same four lights and previous turn-lights. But this time the assembly was far much better and impressive.

The interiors had had a new consolle padded with Skai, a new beautiful dashboard were added with a fully instruments complement (with a clock and rev-counter) and a totally revised e much more comfortable seats. Finally a TC Fiat 125-fashion wheel was included along the gear column command cloche-fashioned, placed on the tunnel hump. Some 4000 changes were included in the rebuild process of this model and the Polish car sold very well in Europe, Latin America, Middle and Far East. When Fiat licence agreement came to end the car was batipsed FSO 125p "Polda". During the 1972 Montecarlo's Rally, three 125ps were among the best places.

This was the last produced version, a very good and reliable car which achived many and many successes. Their main qualities were the sturdiness and the reliability, their faults the consomptions (a bit high) and the weakness to the rust menace. They were assembled in the (ex) Yugoslavia also by a sister company, the Zastava brand (Polski-Fiat/Zastava) at Belgrado.
